Overview
Whitening toothpaste typically works by mechanically removing surface stain via mild abrasives, and in some formulations includes small amounts of peroxide or other chemistries.
How it works
- Abrasive particles polish away extrinsic stain from enamel during brushing.
- Any true bleaching effect from peroxide in toothpaste is limited by very short contact time.
Best for
- Preventing new surface stain from accumulating.
- Maintenance after a whitening course.
What to consider
- Highly abrasive formulas may contribute to enamel wear over time - check for the ADA Seal or a low RDA value.
- Will not lighten the underlying tooth color meaningfully.
